Winder drum torque control works in two ways to affect the winding set of paper. First, in conjunction with the web
tension, it creates a drum nip force that adds to or subtracts from the nip force created by the roll weight and rider
roll loading depending on how the paper wraps the drum rolls. Secondly, in a rear drum wrap arrangement, the front
drum torque force resists the nip rejection of the paper layers thereby increasing the wound-in-tension of the winding
rolls. This does not occur in a front drum wrap arrangement which leads to a less tight start at the core. The
power of front drum torque can be evaluated by defining the Front Drum Torque Factor (FDTF) and comparing it to
the paper layer-to-layer friction factor.
