Suction Roll Material Comparison, 2004 Paper Summit, Spring Technical & International Environmental Conference, (including Papermakers; Process Control, Electrical & Information; Product & Product Quality)
Suction rolls are expensive, yet necessary components of modern paper making machines. These components are
used in water removal and to control the wet paper web during the papermaking process. Geometrical factors, along
with operating stresses and corrosive operating environments require a deep understanding of the material
requirements for long-lived suction roll shells.
The principal material features that define the most suitable suction roll shells are discussed including
microstructure; chemical composition; mechanical properties; corrosion resistance; corrosion fatigue; residual
stress; threshold fatigue crack growth; and experience. New data on residual stress and threshold fatigue crack
growth are presented.
