Preliminary Work on VOC and HAP Recovery Using Ionic Liquids, 2004 Paper Summit, Spring Technical & International Environmental Conference, (including Papermakers; Process Control, Electrical & Information; Product & Product Quality)
VOC and HAP capture from dryer and press exhaust in the wood panel industry is difficult because there is a wide
range of compounds in dilute concentrations, a large gas volume, and high gas moisture content. Absorption into an
ionic liquid is proposed as a low-energy, low-cost way to clean exhaust gas. Ionic liquids are thermally stable to
almost 400EF, have no measurable vapor pressure, and can be regenerated with vacuum and reused. A wide range
of organic compounds are soluble in ionic liquids. The VOCs could be recovered for fuel or chemical products.
The solubility of VOCs will be tested in ionic liquids. A prototype absorption unit will be constructed to allow
long-term testing of the most promising ionic liquid on exhaust from a lumber kiln, panel press, and a green furnish
dryer. Successful completion of this project will provide the data and experience to allow commercialization of the
technology.
