This paper discusses three projects funded in part by the U.S. DOE’s Agenda 2020 program, in which the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) is developing its METHANE de-NOX® reburning process for NOx reduction and combustion improvement in woodwaste-fired stokers. The technology was first demonstrated in this program on a bark and sludge-fired boiler at a paper mill in Minnesota. A second project has started at a mill in Louisiana to test the process using non-condensable waste gas (NCG) and stripper off-gas (SOG) as a portion of the reburn fuel. A third project is underway to optimize the process at yet another mill to further improve NOx and CO emissions, improve boiler efficiency and reduce the use of natural gas as cofiring fuel.
