Clean Condensate Alternative Studies at Several Unbleached Kraft Mills, 2004 Paper Summit, Spring Technical & International Environmental Conference, (including Papermakers; Process Control, Electrical & Information; Product & Product Quality)
The following will describe the feasibility of using the “Clean Condensate Alternative” (CCA) in lieu of the Pulp
and Paper MACT I – Phase II requirements found in §63.446 for control of HAPs from Kraft pulping systems at
several mills. As a result, a “Baseline Study” as required by §63.447(d) was conducted.
At the facilities, two scenarios were investigated:
1. Baseline – Emissions from affected sources while collecting and treating (in steam stripper) the select named
condensate streams that provide compliance with the MACT I condensate collection and treatment requirements.
The affected source emissions estimated were from the wastewater treatment, the brown stock washers, and the
paper machine area.
2. Clean condensate scenario– baseline plus collection and steam stripping of additional digester or evaporator
condensate streams to result in a reduction in the total estimated emissions from the three previously described
affected sources.
The emission estimations were done utilizing the procedures in Appendix C in the rule (Water 9 modeling), NCASI
emission factors, and ASPEN modeling.
