Research studies in this program have been directed at improving the quality and overall energy requirements for the production of composite board products. Several catalytic systems have been investigated and recently, the use of select nanoclays has been shown to enhance overall curing properties and physical board properties when employing UF resins. The benefits of nanoclays with UF SW particle board properties was shown to enhance their performance with respect to water absorption and thickness swelling, and these benefits were captured only when certain nanoclay additives were utilized.
