Residual Management at SSCC’s Stevenson Mill, 2004 Paper Summit, Spring Technical & International Environmental Conference, (including Papermakers; Process Control, Electrical & Information; Product & Product Quality)
The JSC Stevenson mill is located in northern Alabama. The mill produces approximately 830,000 tons per
year of medium, using approximately 50% OCC and 50% virgin (correct as necessary). Presently Stevenson’s
two paper machines are ranked among the most productive medium machines per inch width operating in the
world. The power house consists of 5 boilers. Two Power Boilers that utilize #6 fuel oil, a Recovery Boiler,
and two Wood Residual Boilers that burn wood and most of our residual products. The mill has a wastewater
treatment system that includes 2 primary clarifiers, 2 screw presses, 4 Aerated Stabilization Basins, 1 Activated
Sludge Unit, 2 Secondary Clarifiers, 1 Thickener, 3 Holding Ponds, and 1 Sludge Pond. Final discharge of
treated effluent is to the Tennessee River under the provisions of an NPDES permit. Solid wastes are disposed
on site.
The Stevenson Vision is to be recognized as a preferred supplier of corrugated medium in North America with
high productivity, low cost, premium quality, and a high performance product mix.
The mill is committed to the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), presently a STAR mill. Recordable
injury rates have steadily improved with no injuries requiring medical attention in 2003, surpassing 1,000,000
man-hours worked without a recordable injury.
