A Sensor for Non-Contact Monitoring of Paper Elastic Properties During Manufacture, 2004 Paper Summit, Spring Technical & International Environmental Conference, (including Papermakers; Process Control, Electrical & Information; Product & Product Quality)

A laser-based ultrasonic sensor for non-contact measurement of paper flexural rigidity (bending stiffness) was developed for installation on a full-scale papermaking machine. The sensor is designed to be integrated easily with a commercially available sensor scanning system already installed on the machine. Results of preliminary tests on a pilot scale web simulator for web speeds to 9 m/s (1771 feet/min) with a paper of basis weight 77 g/m2 are reported here. Flexural rigidities in machine and cross directions were calculated from the frequency dependence of the phase velocity of Ao mode Lamb waves. These ultrasonic waves were generated in the paper with pulses from a Nd:YAG laser delivered by an optical fiber. Lamb waves were detected with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer coupled with a scanning mirror/timing system to compensate for paper motion.
