Application of Enzymes in Production of Release and High Density Papers, 2000 Pulping / Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings

A. Kantelinen, J. Sarkar, T. Oksanen--Production of release and high density papers requires high amounts of refining energy. The use of cellulase/hemicellulase enzymes prior to refining is proposed to modify the fiber surface and improve the fibrillation in the following mechanical treatment. Thus, less energy is needed to obtain a target refining level. As a consequence improved properties of final paper, e.g., higher density, which might help in obtaining a more closed sheet with higher z-directional strength, can be obtained. In order to maintain good strength properties the use of cellulase containing enzyme mixtures requires a thorough optimization. This was demonstrated by laboratory studies and mill examples of release and high density paper production.
