Circular Stacker/Reclaimers, Improving Chip Storage & Recovery, 2000 Pulping / Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings
M. Griffin--In 1989 the mill closed its woodroom and converted to a 100% purchased wood chip fiber supply. This conversion included removal of the roundwood flume, debarking drum, chipping equipment, etc...which made up the log handling system. The geographical location of the mill assures that the majority of chip suppliers are located a short distance away and gives the mill the luxury of purchasing less expensive sawmill chips as well as chip mill chips for wood fiber supply.
With this change the mill was totally dependent on outside sources for chips and as before required a new chip storage system that had a large enough chip storage volume to overcome anticipated interruptions in chip supply for any reasons. Another requirement was the system operate reliably and deliver chips at rates to satisfy digester production.
