Biobleaching of Hardwood Kraft Pulp by a Marine Fungus and Its Enzyme, 2000 Pulping / Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings

R. Kondo, X. Lin, K. Sakai--Marine fungi, which were isolated from Mangrove stands, Okinawa, Japan, were screened based on the delignification ability. The strain, named MG-60, was employed to bleach hardwood kraft pulp in vivo. The pulp brightness bleached by MG-60 was much higher than that by Phanerochaete chrysosporium. MnP was extracted from the culture when the unbleached hardwood kraft pulp (UHKP) was bleached in vivo. Higher MnP activity of MG-60 was observed compared to that of P. chrysosporium at the same incubation conditions. In addition, MnP secreted from MG-60 showed good stability against high sea salt concentration.

UHKP was also biobleached by crude enzymes secreted by MG-60 at 0% and 3% sea salts concentrations in vitro. The brightness increased about 11 points and kappa number decreased from 5 and 9 points with 0.5mM H2 O2 continual addition when 20U and 4U of crude enzymes was added, respectively.
