Bleaching of Recycled Fibers by Adding Sodium Borohydride to an Oxygen Stage, 2000 Pulping / Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings

Y. Ni, J. Somerville, A. R. van Heiningen--It is known that using oxidative and reductive chemicals in a sequence but different stages is very efficient in bleaching recycled fibers. In this paper we report that when sodium borohydride is used as the reducing agent, and oxygen as the oxidizing agent, they can be combined in a single stage. By adding an effective amount of sodium borohydride to an oxygen stage for the treatment of recycled fibers we found that the bleaching effect, characterized by the decrease in Dye Removal Index (DRI) and the increase in brightness, is significantly improved. Such a process simplifies the process configuration since less stages are needed to reach the same target brightness. The effect of process variables, such as sodium borohydride charge, will also be reported.
