Overview of Selected Non Wood Fibers for Paper Making, 2000 Pulping / Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings

J. T. Jeyasingam--Wood fibers are the dominant raw materials for countries where wood is available. Non wood fibers are widely used in countries where wood is in short supply. Examples are China, India and many other Asian, East European, Middle East,. African and Latin American countries. The free availability of wood for pulping is shrinking and this could result in a higher demand for non wood fibers as an alternative material.

This paper is focusing on selective non wood fibers currently used by the paper industry. The positive paper making properties are highlighted based on the practical experience gained in using these non wood fibers for commercial production.

The non wood fibers discussed in this paper are:- straw (wheat and rice) (Illuk Alpine Grass) bagasse, bamboo, reed, common hemp, Sunn hemp, cotton linters, Kenaf, Abaca and date palm ribs.
