How to Control the Variation of the Wood Moisture Content of Logs from the Stand to the Woodyard? The Contribution of..., 2000 Pulping / Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings

T. Fauchon, G. Chantre, C. Deleuze--Controlling the moisture content of the wood used for pulp manufacture is very important for the knowledge of the real flow and the cost price of the fibrous raw material, and also the quality ontrol for the TMP process. The standard procedure consists in oven drying a wood sample. This technique is mostly used for wood chips. For logs, coefficient have been calculated to convert fresh tons into dry tons. Those coefficients vary a lot according to the species, the season, the duration after harvesting, the log diameter, etc. In this paper, two different approaches are suggested. The first one consists in describing different recent techniques and sampling procedures for the fast and reliable measurement of wood moisture content directly on the trucks. Secondly a modelling approach is proposed as an alternative key to estimate the moisture content of logs depending on the species, the number of days after harvesting and the meteorological data. The modelling approach is described with the future contributions which can be guessed.
