Friction Between Wood and Pulpstone in Grinding, 2000 Pulping / Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings

Gros--The aim of this work was to study the effects in wood grinding of compression and shearing rate combined to a parameter expressing the impulse or impact, i.e. Fc/vd, reflecting the product of force and time. Increased grinding impulse led to higher rate of wood advance and also higher drag force. It was demonstrated that the rate of wood advance determined pulp freeness, as drag force again determined tensile index.
Juvenile wood provided a higher rate of wood advance than mature wood under certain compression/ shearing rate conditions, and it led accordingly to higher freeness and lower tensile index than for mature wood pulps. Air-dry wood again gave a lower rate of wood advance and simultaneously a lower drag force. This might be explained by more effective softening due to wood dryness, which results in a lower drag force.
