P. Watson, S. Potter--Species from the genus Populus have been promoted for fast-growing plantation forestry, particularly for Northern regions. Populus species can have high growth rates - up to 30 m 3 /ha/yr - and produce pulps of high natural brightness with a wide range of fibre, pulping and pulp properties. Just as with eucalyptus, for Populus there is a genetically diverse natural resource which is relatively uncharacterized. Thus there is an important opportunity for improved wood quality. This paper details the progress being made toward the rapid identification of superior Populus clones with improved industrial properties. It is argued that in the short term, rapid identification of better natural hybrids is preferred over genetic modification for plantation breeding programs.
