K. Doiron, Y. Ni, A. R. P. van Heiningen--This paper describes the development of a thermal treatment for fluorescence removal. By washing pulp at higher temperatures it is possible to decrease the fluorescence to levels comparable to that obtained by ozone bleaching. The fluorescence removal by this socalled thermal treatment can be described by a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. It is shown that high temperature displacement washing is very effective for fluorescence removal, and may represent a low capital cost implementation of the thermal treatment for recycled fiber mills with a fluorescence problem.
