In a conventional H202 bleaching process, the chemical charge of H202 applied on pulp not completely consumed. For moderate brightness gain (2 % H202 applied on pulp) H202 consumption is typically around 80 %. However, when higher brightness gain is required (3 % to 4 % H202 applied on pulp) the H202 consumption can be much lower. It is demonstrated that the residual H2O2 can be reactivated by the addition o f extra alkali and that a significant additional brightness gain can be achieved after some retention time with the reactivated H2 02. The optimum conditions for NaOH addition are described. Contrary to the current practice which consists of recycling the residual H202 upstream, this procedure achieves high brightness (83 % ISO) CTMP and SGWP without any new major investment and also minimizes the chemical charge of H202.
