What Happens During Sequential DC Bleaching?, 1990 Pulping Conference Proceedings

The Cl2 and Cl02 concentration time profiles were determined during (DC) and (D+C) prebleaching of oxygen-delignified kraft pulp under various conditions. The Cl2 concentration profile was related to the formation of tri- and tetrachlorinated phenolics but could not alone describe their formation. As a result of rapid chlorine consumption immediately after the chlorine charge and good delignification, DC bleaching was found to be advantageous under appropriate conditions. For Cl02 fractions between 0.3 and 0.7 of total active chlorine, the AOX formation was found to be mainly determined by the extent of delignification in the prebleaching, for (DC)E as well as (D+C)E.
