Washing for Low Bleach Chemical Consumption, 1990 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Saltcake loss has traditionally been used to measure washing results. Saltcake is good way to figure make-up needs, but it does not correlate very well with bleach chemical consumption, especially if process and/or equipment changes are made.

Dissolved organic solids, measured as COD or dissolved lignin, are more reliable measures of carry-over to a bleach plant. Dissolved organic substance inside the fibers diffuses very slowly to the surrounding liquor compared to sodium. Laboratory results are used to explain the different organic solids washing results displayed by different types of washers. Washers with long retention times display better washing of organic solids relative to sodium than washers with short retention times.
