Hardwood Pulping and Oxygen Delignification, 1990 Pulping Conference Proceedings

SODRA installed an oxygen delignification stage on the hardwood line in the Morrum mill in October 1989. The investment was made to meet environmental regulations. Half a year after start up good process parameters were established. The kappa numbers after cooking and oxygen delignification were then 18 and 12 respectively. The bleaching chemicals needed decreased from 68 to 32 kg per ton as active chlorine. Pulp quality data were unchanged but the intrinsic viscosity was decreased from 1050 to 870 dm3/kg.

A laboratory study showed that strength properties were unaffected when the degree of delignification was less than about 30 % in the oxygen stage. The yield loss in the oxygen stage is proportional to the kappa number reduction and independent of the ingoing kappa number.
