Use of Ozone in Bleaching Pulps, 1991 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Ozone has been used either alone or with other bleaching agents in a multi-stage process, largely to replace the delignification done by the molecular chlorine. The effects of the main variables (consistency, pH, time, temperature, pretreatment of chemicals, chemical additives) on the properties of hardwood and softwood kraft and kraft-02 pulps are reviewed. Results on high-consistency ozone bleaching are given to show that the optimum pH for an ozone stage is between 2-3, the best ozone consumption on pulp is between 25 and 46% consistency; temperature up to 60°C has little effect on ozone stage efficiency; an extraction stage after the ozone stage improves the bleachability of the pulp. Pilot plants are also discussed.
