Results of a Novel Deinking Process Being Developed at Georgia Tech, 1991 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Ink removal or deinking during fiber recycling consists of dislodging ink particles from the fiber surfaces as well as removing the dislodged ink from the fiber network. An efficient deinking step minimizes the mechanical and chemical actions on the fiber and minimizes the number of subsequent washing and/or flotation steps as well; thus maintaining high fiber quality and low recycling costs. A new deinking process being developed at Georgia Tech, the GT Process, makes the ink removal more efficient. Old Newsprint (ONP), Directory, Catalog, and office waste papers were used in the preliminary lab testing. The lab results indicated an increase in GE brightness in the range of 2- 6 points, depending on the waste type. Preliminary lab results on brightness, ink removal, and strength properties are discussed in this paper.
