Kraft Black Liquor Combustion and Direct Causticization with Titanium Dioxide, 1991 Pulping Conference Proceedings

The ignition temperature and burning time of kraft black liquor solids with or without TiO2 admixture were measured by thermoanalytical methods. The ignition temperature was significantly lowered by the presence of TiO2. The melting point of the combustion product of kraft black liquor mixed with TiO2 is much higher than that of kraft black liquor alone because of formation of high melting sodium titanates by the direct causticization reaction between TiO2 and Na2CO3. Simultaneous combustion and direct causticization of kraft black liquor with TiO2 was studied in an isothermal tube furnace. It was found that complete conversion of Na2CO3 into sodium titanates such as Na2O.TiO2 and 4Na2O.5TiO2 could be achieved in a relatively short time with high TiO2/Na2CO3 molar ratio of 1.25. The presence of TiO2 reduced the sulfur emission. Hydrolysis of Na2O.TiO2 and 4Na2O.5TiO2 produced Na20.3TiO2 and NaOH.
