Medium-Consistency Pilot Bleach Plant, 1991 Pulping Conference Proceedings

A pilot plant was constructed at the Paprican facility in Pointe Claire, Quebec, Canada to study the bleaching of chemical pulps and the brightening of mechanical pulps at medium consistency. The pilot plant simulates a single stage of a commercial medium-consistency bleach plant and has a nominal capacity of 5 metric tons/day (oven-dried basis). Multi-stage bleaching is accomplished by repeatedly processing the pulp through the system. Several innovations were adopted to make the pilot plant operational with both mechanical and chemical pulps. Novel bleaching processes developed in the laboratory are being investigated. Preliminary pilot-scale results of Eop delignification of unbleached softwood kraft pulp are presented.
