Evaluation of Lightweight Contamination in an OCC System, 1991 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Chesapeake Paper Products Company of West Point, Virginia, upgraded its OCC recycling facility to maximize contaminant removal with emphasis on lightweight material. The coarse and fine screening operations were replaced with hole and slotted baskets of half the original dimensions. Forward and reverse centrifugal cleaner systems were also installed.

An unique test procedure incorporating image analysis was used to characterize lightweight contaminant levels. A baseline lightweight contaminant survey was conducted prior to the installation of new equipment and repeated after the upgrade to determine its impact.

Comparison of baseline to upgrade survey information showed the average contaminant size and total contamination level (PPM) to decrease by more than 50% and 40%, respectively.
