Deinking ONP for Directory, the Low Cost Approach, 1991 Pulping Conference Proceedings

At the Edmundston, N. B. - Madawaska, Me. complex a low cost (under $1,000,000) 80 tpd design deinking system has been installed and successfully started up. The objective behind installing the deinking system was to supply deinked pulp to replace purchased low freeness groundwood pulp. The end use of the deinked pulp is in Directory grades at 10 to 15% of the furnish. The goals for the system were initially a 55 brightness and no stickies. This paper will give an overview of early trials (non-deinking), their goals and results. It will also include the design of the wash deinking system and the reasoning behind the choices made. The paper also includes discussion of the labwork prior to start-up and some of the concerns faced. The final section contains results from the first two weeks of the start-up period.
