Quality and Shipping Requirements for Purchased Nonwood Raw Fibers, 1991 Pulping Conference Proceedings

It is essential for a nonwood pulpmaker to get the raw fiber material in acceptable condition and quality for economical pulping. The most common nonwood fiber materials for speciality paper pulps have been discussed in this paper. These fibers include abaca, cot-ton, hemp, seed oil flax, textile flax, kenaf, and sisal. The treatment methods of every fiber from crop to digester are described and quality requirements for raw fiber are given from speciality paper-makers point of view. The optimum bale size, bale density and type of wrapping for clean and safe container transportation have been discussed. Even quality of the raw fiber and optimum bale condition give a pulpmaker several benefits in the form of chemical savings, higher yield, even pulp strength and a possibility for a more simple pulp mill.
