Development of an Ozone Bleaching Process, 1992 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Ozone bleaching has been studied for years but no commercial system for kraft pulp has ever been built. For more than a decade Union Camp has worked on developing a successful ozone bleaching technology, including operation of a 25 TPD pilot plant for the last four years. Technology breakthroughs have permitted the production of OZED pulp with satisfactory pulp properties at much lower bleaching chemical costs than for currently used bleaching sequences and with very large environmental emission improvements. A 900 metric A.D. ton per day OZED bleach plant on kraft pine pulp is starting up at Union Camp’s Franklin, Virginia Mill in the third quarter of 1992.
