The use of increased amounts of de- nked fibre highlights the need for enhanced ink removal and brightness recovery. The performance of encapsulated hydrophobic particles (EPD) was compared with conventional ink collector systems in flotation deinking in order to gain several points increase in brightness. The influence of particle size and particle hydrophobicity together with a suggested mechanism by which such compounds work is also discussed. The advantage of the EPD system over conventional chemical collectors is its ability to control the ink/collector particle size for optimum flotation performance irrespective of water conditions available.
