My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Wax blends used to coat corrugated paperboard containers may be easily modified to release from paper fibers during repulping. These modifiers are termed "Fiber Release Additives" (FRAs). Reformulation of wax blends can also help eliminate stickies formation. When the pulping temperature was much lower than the wax melting point, non-tacky wax flakes were generated. The size of the wax flakes indicated they may be suitable for removal by screening and cleaning. When the pulping temperature was close to the wax melting point, stickies were generated. Tackiness of the stickies was governed by: pulping pH and consistency, wax viscosity, and FRA content.
