My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
Only half the lignin in kraft pulps can be removed by oxygen delignification before serious strength losses occur. Oxidative pretreatments prior to oxygen delignification allow greater lignin removal and thus reduce the output of chlorinated organic compounds from the later bleaching stages. In this study, peroxymonosulfate was evaluated as a potential pretreatment. Spruce and pine kraft pulps were pretreated with peroxymono-sulfate before oxygen delignification. A preliminary treatment with a chelating agent or a mineral acid to remove transition metals was found to be essential prior to the peroxymonosul-fate pretreatment. The peroxymonosulfate pretreatment was found to be as effective as the best of the previously studied pretreatments and is less polluting and more convenient to employ.
