Low Kappa Factor Bleaching of Oxygen Delignified Softwood Kraft Pulp, 1993 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Bleaching studies were performed on oxygen delignified softwood kraft pulp using a DlOO(EO)D sequence to investigate the effect of decreasing kappa factor with the use of peroxide reinforced oxygen extraction and enzyme bleach boosting. The objective was to determine the impact on effluent quality and bleaching costs while maintaining pulp brightness and viscosity. Results showed that low kappa factor bleaches with either D(EOP)D or XD(EOP)D sequences maintain both pulp brightness and viscosity. Both effluent color and AOX decreased proportionally with the kappa factor. Compared to bleaching at 0.25 kappa factor, effluent color decreased by over 30% to 17 kg/ADt at 0.10 kappa factor. Similarly, AOX decreased by over 40% to 0.75 kg/ADt. Cost savings of $1-$2/t resulted with the use of enzyme and/or hydrogen peroxide to decrease chlorine dioxide in the DlOO or Dl stage, depending on operating strategy.
