On the Modeling of Kraft Pulping, 1993 Pulping Conference Proceedings

A pulping model can be a useful tool for evaluating process alternatives. The goal of this project was to provide a model for simulating the effect of the main process variables on pulp kappa, yield, viscosity, and residual alkali in black liquor. A detailed pulping model based on reaction-diffusion in wood chips has been developed at the University of Washington. This paper discusses a modeling approach used to approximate 3-dimensional diffusion of alkali in chips. The model predicts the effect of alkali diffusion on pulping non-uniformity and estimates the fiber kappa distribution. The model also calculates pulp viscosity. Experimental data from three different sources for laboratory and commercial chips are compared with predicted values. The model can be used as an application tool to study the tradeoff between productivity, pulp kappa, viscosity and pulping non-uniformity.
