The parameters governing the reactivity of ozone toward kraft pulp at medium consistency (7%-20%) have been evaluated by static ozone bleaching of pulp sheets. By varying the consistency and the pH of the pulp, we have been able to establish a relationship between the thickness of the immobile water layer surrounding the fibres and the extent of the reaction. A second relationship betweeen the pH and the observed reactivity has been established and has been explained by the effect of pH on ozone solubility. By combining these relationships, a general equation describing the static ozone bleaching at medium consistency has been found. Data from the literature have been used to generalize the relationship between the pH and the reactivity for ozone bleaching at low and medium consistency.
