New High Efficiency, Low Cost TRS Scavenging System, 1993 Pulping Conference Proceedings
The paper industry is continually faced with more stringent Total Reduced Sulfur (TRS) air emission limits. While environmentally laudable, the economic impact is great. Existing scrubber systems are often insufficient for meeting the tighter regulations. Chemical treatment costs also escalate since most chemical systems react with all acidic gasses present in the stack emissions. These problems have been overcome through the use of a class of patented scrubbing compounds that have been used successfully for the removal of hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans in the natural gas industry since 1988. The scrubbing compound reacts electively with many of the chemicals that make up TRS. Chemical costs are reduced dramatically because only those chemicals that need to be removed are removed. Costly equipment purchases or upgrades are also avoided due to the high efficiency of the nearly instantaneous chemical reaction. The scrubbing compound has also been shown to be effective for the removal of sulfur compounds throughout a variety of other sources in the paper mill.
