Bleaching Mixed Office Waste to High Brightness, 1993 Pulping Conference Proceedings

A secondary fiber bleaching study was conducted in the University of Maine Pilot Plant. The purpose of this study was to produce high quality pulp from secondary fiber without using chlorine based bleaching agents. Mixed office waste was selected for this work. MOW was deinked, screened and then bleached to high brightness levels. The pulp was bleached using sequences consisting of combination of oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, ozone, sodium hydrosulfite and formamidine sulfinic acid. The following bleaching sequences were applied in order to optimize the final brightness and the cost of chemicals: (EOP)ZP, (EOP)ZY and (EOP)ZFAS. This paper describes these deinking and bleaching experiments as well as the observed impact on optical properties such as brightness, opacity, light scattering and color distribution.
