Environmental Opportunities in the Wood Yard of 2005, 1993 Pulping Conference Proceedings

The wood yard will be facing more and varied environmental compliance opportunities as we enter the twenty first century. Federal regulations developed in accordance with Federal statutes such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, will impact wood yard practices in the future. In areas where Federal regulations are not in place, such as non-point source emissions and wastewater discharges, and raw material storage, state regulations will be modeled after the more progressive States. Additionally, we can look to how other industries -- such as utilities and their coal yards -- that store raw materials outdoors are regulated. In short, the wood yard will be impacted either directly or indirectly in all areas of environmental control -- air, water, and solid waste.

Some of the impacts from these regulations may include:

- Clay or synthetic impervious lining of bark and wood storage areas

- Tighter controls for bark and wood waste boilers

- Paving of roads in wood yard

- Treatment of stormwater run-off from wood yard
