My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
S.C.H. Tay, M.D. Ouchi, F.B. Cramer
The wood resin in aspen kraft pulps is predominantly encapsulated in ray parenchyma cells that protect it from removal during normal diffusion washing. Hence, conventional pulp washing operations which use multiple-stage drum washers or diffusion washers cannot effectively remove the resin. The resulting high level of residual resin entering the paper mill with the pulp exacerbates pitch deposition problems at the paper machine and degrades product quality.
