Extended Delignification with Oxygen and Hydrogen Peroxide in ECF and TFC Sequences, 1994 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Extended delignification in cooking and oxygen delignification, combined with pressurized (PO) stages means that the demand for bleaching chemicals can be reduced in both TCF and ECF bleaching sequences.
In TCF bleaching, the maximum final brightness is increased when the kappa number is reduced after oxygen delignification. Other advantages are reduced effluent load and closure of the bleach plant.
In this paper, different possibilities to reduce the kappa number after the oxygen stage, or the combined oxygen/peroxide delignification stage, will be discussed for softwood kraft pulps. The effect of retention time, pretreatment and addition of peroxide on the delignification and selectivity will be shown.
Sequences that will be discussed are OQO, OQ(PO), OQ(PO)D(EP)D and ODQ(PO)D(EP)D.
