Use of High Conversion Peroxyacids in Non-Chlorine Bleaching Sequences for Recycled Fibers, 1994 Pulping Conference Proceedings
Stephen J. Szegda
Market pressure and regulations are forcing bleached pulp manufacturers to take a close look at non-chlorine delignifying and bleaching technologies. Oxygen, Ozone, and Hydrogen Peroxide all have limitations involving oxidizing ability or capital requirements. High conversion Peroxyacids (Pxa) has demonstrated advantages when incorporated into bleaching sequences in both kraft and sulfite pulp segments. While sequences for recycled fibers are generally less complicated (shorter) than the virgin fibers, there is a need for an effective non-chlorine bleaching agent like Pxa with high oxidizing power, reasonable cost and modest investment.
The paper will present the results of using Pxa in non-chlorine bleaching sequences on a number of recycled furnishes, including mixed office waste. Commercially significant bleaching results, coupled with flexible operating conditions and ease of substitution of conventional bleaching agents, are illustrated.
