Low Kappa Number Pulping - Mill Experiences, 1994 Pulping Conference Proceedings

G. Goyal, V. Jokela, F.C. Munro

The growing concerns over the AOX generation in the bleaching of the pulp by chlorine containing compounds have forced the industry to pulp to lower kappa numbers. This has been achieved either by new pulping technologies or by additives in conventional kraft pulping. Various displacement batch processes such as RDH, Superbatch, Enerbatch and continuous process (EMCC) have commercial operations pulping to low kappa numbers. The goal of low kappa number pulping has also been achieved by the use of polysulfide/AQ in kraft pulping. Roundtable participants will focus on mill experiences of pulping to low kappa numbers by these new pulping technologies as well as by polysulfide/AQ pulping.
