Impact of Log Diameter and Log Sample Location on Chip Size Distribution, 1994 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Alastair Twaddle

Hand-barked pine logs of known diameter and length were singly fed into a production drop-feed chipper. Chip samples taken from each log indicated no significant relationships between log diameter and the proportion of different size fractions produced, although the under-sized fraction showed a trend of decreasing with increasing log size. Samples from the butt, middle and top of each log showed significant differences in the generation of under-sized chips, while the size of the accept fraction was significantly different between the middle and the top.
