Fractionation Technology and Its Applications, 1994 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Chi J. Yu, Ronald J. DeFoe, Bruce R. Crossley

Fractionation provides papermakers with the capability of selectively processing either virgin or recycled fiber by separating short and long fiber stock. As a result, each stock quality can be selectively adjusted to suit the production requirements. In this paper, factors that affect fractionation are discussed. It is found that basket aperture size, flow split, and stock freeness are the dominant factors of a fractionator’s performance. The applications of fractionation and their benefits are also discussed.
