Transition metal contaminants in sulfite pulps have a negative impact on the selectivity of some peroxygen based bleaching agents. In the presence of transition metals such as manganese, cobalt, iron and copper, the brightness gains obtainable with a given application of hydrogen peroxide are well below optimum. Pretreatment with acids and/or chelating agents is an economical way to enhance the bleachability of sulfite pulps with peroxygens to levels which were once only obtainable with chlorine based bleaching agents.
