Impact of Recent Pulp Mill Modifications on the Sulfur Content of Crude Sulfate Turpentine, 1994 Pulping Conference Proceedings
C.D. Foran
The average sulfur content of crude sulfate (kraft) turpentine supplying the Union Camp – BBA Jacksonville Terpene and Aromatics plant has increased from 4400 ppm in 1989, to 7000 ppm in 1993. The sulfur in the turpentine is present as organic reduced sulfur compounds.
Process and operating conditions were compared at several hot blow batch mills. The comparison indicates that fairly simple adjustments in digester steaming practice should reduce the turpentine sulfur content at these mills to 25 – 30 % of current levels. It is probable that no penalty in turpentine yield will result.
