Offshore Fiber Supply, 1994 Pulping Conference Proceedings
Paul S. Howell
Offshore fiber supply is not a new concept for many of the pulp and paper producers of the world. However, it is a relatively new direction for the United States Forest Products industry. Environmental regulations have created an artificial shortage of fiber in the U.S. forcing the industry to seek alternatives.
Companies exploring this option have the technical expertise to develop or procure offshore fiber. However, there are certain factors that tend to be under-evaluated when developing a supply strategy. The global environmental movement, levels in investments and commitments and world fiber trade are discussed to aid a company in choosing a procurement approach.
