Advanced Screening Concepts of Different Pressure Groundwood Pulps for High Quality Printing Papers, 1994 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Pekka Haikkala, Harri Nerg, David Robinson, Heikki Liimatainen

Trials were conducted at Valmet Pulping Technology Center in Finland to study the effects of screening on three different types of pressure groundwood pulps. These pulps were made from the same wood lot using shower water temperatures 70, 100 and 1300C. The screening of the different pulps was carried out using pressure screens with very fine (0.1 mm) slotted wedge wire baskets for efficient removal of shives and coarse fibers, producing pulps targeted at high quality LWC papers.

The pit pulp properties typical to the PGW family. The best optical properties and lowest shive levels were attained at lower temperatures and the best strength properties were achieved at the higher temperatures.
