The article discusses the possibilities of using specific grass fibres in high-quality papers. A Finnish/Swedish agro fibre project covers the whole production chain from fibre production to the final product – paper.
Reed Canary grass and Tall fescue have short narrow fibres and produce pulp with a greater number of fibres than most hardwoods. Thus they are suitable for end products that require pulp with good printing properties. Grass fibres are easy to pulp and can be cooked and bleached using existing technique.
Fine paper production from grass fibres can be developed into a profitable business. This requires: primarily integration of the grass fibre line with a mill cooking wood and secondly use of a delayed harvesting system. Reed canary grass is one alternative to meet part of the short-fibre demand in the Nordic countries.
