Disposal of pulping waste liquor has always been a problem for small sized pulp and paper mills in China, as most of them are operating either with the sulfate or soda cooking process. In the seventies, a number of small mills in the country switched over to the adoption of the ammonium sulfite cooking method. Direct utilization of the ammonium sulfite waste liquor for irrigation and fertilization purpose proved to be a good way for the disposal. However, irrigation and fertilization are seasonal demands, and storage of pulping waste liquor is impractical. One Chinese mill has its ammonium sulfite waste liquor concentrated and sold as adhesives etc, but is ready to provide the neighboring farmlands with its pulping waste liquor when needed.
